Maison Fortune Orphanage Foundation (MFOF) supports the Maison Fortune Orphanage (MFO) and Primary School located in Hinche, Haiti. Together our shared goal is to raise awareness and funds to help make sure our residents are empowered to become the future leaders of Haiti.
MFO was founded in 2000 by Lefort Jean Louis. He started with a one room house and four orphans, then quickly expanded to 30. In 2002 as a newly formed Foundation, we purchased the property on Rue de Veronique, which formed the property we now refer to as the Boys Campus. In 2004 MFO was able to expand rapidly and in 2005 the orphanage grew to include its own primary school serving both residents and children from the community. In 2008 our first 20 girls took up residence and today they occupy the Girls Campus in the Village Creole section of Hinche. Jean Louis remains on our staff as our Founder and MFO Executive Director.
Today we serve 156 boys and 85 girls in residence and another 150 children attend the primary school each day and are provided lunch. Each day our all-Haitian staff serves over 700 meals and washes countless loads of laundry– all with love and care. Not all of our children are orphaned but they are identified as having little to no opportunity for education and often are from single parent home with no resources. Every child at the orphanage attends school and many also participate in sports, scouts or other extra curricula activity. When a child is referred to us we work to find out the story of how they came to be with us to make sure we are the best option to meet their needs. When they are accepted to our family, MFO becomes their legal guardian.
MFO is registered with the Haitian Authority that oversees Orphanages on the national level, the agency is called Institut du Bien-Etre Social et de Recherches, or IBESR.
Since 2002 the MFO Foundation has provided support to the Maison Fortuné Orphanage and is a 501(c) (3) IRS-approved charity. The Foundation is committed to the long-term viability of the orphanage through financial support, outreach to the public, encouraging visits, promoting child-sponsorship, and sharing information about the orphanage.
